Given the early GS clutch problems and G650GS manual notes, semi synthetic JASO MA oil seems best. 2016 Update. For the record, the "new" F650GS isn't a 650 - it has an 800cc twin-cylinder engine, albeit detuned from the donk in "real" 800s. It produces 52kW and 75Nm. And being a twin, it has almost no commonality with the long-running, much-loved and entirely sound F650 GS single-cylinder bike - which really was a 650.
The F650 is indeed a very reliable motor. Mine is still a baby with only 32k miles on it. I had to replace the water pump shaft and seals at around the 20k mile mark. Since the 600 mile service I have not had to adjust the valves. I check them every 6k but its a waste of time.
